How It Works

  1. Use the "Schedule Here" Button to set up a time for an ultrasound. Please note that date and times for scheduled ultrasounds are not confirmed until we have reached out.
  2. Submit applicable medical info and diagnostics for the patient prior to appointment.
  3. Refer to the "Ultrasound Preparation" section for patient and hospital instructions.
  4. After ultrasound is performed, images will be sent to a veterinary radiologist for interpretation to ensure the highest standard of care.

Ultrasound Preparation

Pre-Appointment Instructions

Patient Fasting

  • 8-hour fast minimum for abdominal ultrasounds (water allowed)
  • For emergency cases where fasting isn't possible, please notify HoundSound in advance
  • Schedule morning appointments when possible to minimize fasting discomfort

Sedation and Restraint

  • Adequate sedation is essential for quality imaging and patient comfort
  • Have sedation protocol ready and administered before arrival
  • Ensure staff availability to assist with gentle restraint throughout the procedure
  • Consider anxiolytic pre-medication for stressed patients

Physical Preparation

Patient Positioning

  • Dorsal recumbency capability required - ensure you have:
  • V-trough or positioning aids
  • Adequate table space and padding
  • Staff available to maintain comfortable positioning

Clipping and Cleaning

  • Clip entire ventral abdomen from xiphoid to pubis, extending laterally to include flanks
  • Use #40 blade for close clip
  • Clean clipped area with alcohol to remove loose hair and debris

Consent and Documentation

Owner Authorization

  • Obtain written consent for the ultrasound procedure before our arrival
  • Separate consent required for any potential:
  • Fine needle aspirates (FNA)
  • Tissue core biopsies
  • Cystocentesis
  • Discuss potential additional procedures with owners in advance

Medical Records

  • Make sure to provide all relevant medical information when scheduling. This will be included when submitting the radiology consultation, so it is essential the information is accurate and complete!

Facility Set-up

Equipment and Supplies

  • Have available:
  • Cytology slides and fixative (if FNA anticipated)
  • Various tubes for fluid samples
  • Sterile gloves, needles/syringes
  • Additional towels for patient comfort

Room Setup

  • Quiet, dark environment with minimal distractions
  • Adequate electrical outlets for equipment
  • Clear, clean examination table at appropriate height

Scheduling Considerations

Appointment Planning

  • Allow 45-60 minutes for routine abdominal ultrasounds
  • Schedule complex cases or multiple patients with adequate time between appointments
  • Avoid scheduling immediately after meal times or high-stress procedures

Emergency Protocols

  • Discuss emergency procedures and contact information
  • Ensure crash cart accessibility
  • Have reversal agents available if using sedation protocols

Communication

Before the Visit

  • Confirm appointment 24 hours in advance
  • Notify HoundSound of any patient behavioral concerns if needed
  • Alert us to any changes in patient condition

During the Visit

  • Designate a primary contact person familiar with the case
  • Ensure availability of attending veterinarian on hospital premises
  • Have client contact information readily available for communication of findings

Special Considerations

High-Risk Patients

  • Geriatric animals: Ensure cardiac and renal function assessment prior to sedation
  • Pregnant animals: Confirm pregnancy status and gestational stage if known
  • Critical patients: Have emergency protocols in place

Post-Procedure

  • Plan for appropriate recovery monitoring area
  • Ensure staff availability for post-sedation care
  • Have discharge instructions prepared for owners

Welcome! I’m Dr. Collins, a veterinarian with a passion for diagnostic ultrasound, dedicated to providing high-quality, mobile ultrasound services for dogs and cats. With advanced training in abdominal and soft tissue imaging, I bring veterinary ultrasound directly to your clinic, ensuring comfort and convenience for both pets and their families.

Education & Expertise

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin before pursuing my veterinary degree at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. To further specialize in diagnostic imaging, I completed the Global FAST® Ultrasound Course under Dr. Greg Lisciandro and the Soft Tissue Imaging Program through the Academy of Veterinary Imaging.

I have a special interest in feline ultrasonography and giant breed canine imaging—partly inspired by my own Great Dane, who keeps me well-versed in the unique needs of large dogs!

Why Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a powerful, non-invasive tool that provides real-time insights into a pet’s health. My goal is to deliver comprehensive, precise imaging to support accurate diagnoses and better patient outcomes. Whether it’s detecting early disease, monitoring chronic conditions, or providing peace of mind, I’m committed to enhancing veterinary care through advanced ultrasound.

A Little About Me

When I’m not scanning, you’ll find me spending time with my three dogs (including my gentle giant Great Dane) and two cats, cheering on the Texas Longhorns, or enjoying life with my wife—we married in October 2023.

I look forward to working with you and your veterinary team to provide exceptional diagnostic care for your patients!
